ACTIVITIES AROUND
the hibernation station
Staying at The Hibernation Station gives you so many opportunities to explore the beautiful
Kenai Peninsula. Whether it's fishing, hiking, canoeing, or relaxing, we are located in the perfect spot to be able to experience something new everyday.
Below are a few of our recommendations to include on your Alaskan adventure!
FISHING
Nearby access to the Kenai and Moose Rivers where you have the opportunity to catch King, Coho, Sockeye, and Pink Salmon, as well as Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. The Russian and Kasilof rivers are also only 30-40 minutes away.
Scout Lake is right up the road and is stocked with Rainbow Trout and Artic Grayling. As well as the many lakes on Swanson River Rd. Take advantage of the world class fishing that the Kenai Peninsula has to offer!

HIKING & WILDLIFE VIEWING
Sterling is right next to the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. You will find many places to hike there and will likely see Bald Eagles, Brown Bears, Black Bears, Moose, or Caribou. Skilak Lake Rd has many beautiful trails to hike. From easy to more challenging routes, we suggest using a trail app like AllTrails to find out what would be the best option for you and your group. There are also even more trails between Sterling and Cooper Landing that start at the highway and venture deep into the beautiful Alaskan wilderness. Always remember that you are in bear country and bringing bear spray is highly recommended.
KAYAKING,CANOEING,& BOATING
Swanson River Rd, which begins less than a mile from the hotel, is your direct access to the Swanson River and Swan Lake Canoe Routes. It's located in the northern section of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and in that same area you will find plenty of lakes to explore, such as Dolly Varden lake, Rainbow lake, and Nest lake. Another option is to head to Skilak Lake Rd, its west entrance is right outside town, where you will find many more lakes to explore like Hidden lake, Engineer lake, and of course Skilak lake. There is also a neighboring campground that rents out canoes and boats, making it very easy to get out on the water.

RELAXING
If you prefer a more laid back trip, you can find places to shop for handmade Alaskan items in nearby Soldotna or Kenai. Try one of the local breweries or restaurants! On Wednesdays, in the summer, you can head to Soldotna Creek Park for a market full of local handmade gifts, art, food trucks, and music. Go to Kenai Beach and take in the gorgeous views of the Aleutian Range on the west side of the Cook Inlet.
